Colin Banks
Clinical Lead – Emergency Care
A/Prof Colin Banks is an emergency physician based in Townsville, dedicated to enhancing emergency care capacity in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
His work initially focused on supporting the training of emergency physicians through the University of PNG (UPNG), where he played a key role in all aspects of the exam process, including serving as the UPNG external examiner for the Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine). His contributions were instrumental in three major advancements: the introduction of an emergency medicine-specific Part 1 program, a revision of the Part 2 program, and the creation of a Diploma in Emergency Medicine.
In recent years, Colin has led the implementation of the Integrated Interagency Triage Tool (IITT) in emergency departments across PNG, developing tailored training resources and implementation strategies for each department. His contributions also include supporting short courses like Primary Trauma Care and the Basic Emergency Care course, participating in a leadership workshop in late 2023, and helping to draft the constitution for the PNG Society for Emergency Medicine.
As part of the RECSI initiative, Colin serves as the Clinical Lead for emergency care in PNG, where he continues to drive improvements in the country's emergency care systems.
