Lewis McLean
Clinical Lead - Critical Care
Dr Lewis McLean is an Intensivist at Nepean ICU and John Hunter Hospital ICU in NSW, Australia. He is the current Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) Global Intensive Care Initiative (GICI). He is passionate about improving critical care in low- and lower-middle-income countries, and has significant experience in healthcare system development across the Indo-Pacific region.
Having completed his fellowship at the Alfred Hospital in critical care education and echocardiography, Lewis plays a leading role in developing training programs for critical care ultrasonography in both high-income and resource-limited settings. Lewis’s expertise includes point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and he holds a Diploma in Diagnostic Ultrasound (Critical Care). He is actively involved in the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and the College of Intensive Care Medicine’s Critical Care Ultrasonography Special Interest Group. He is the co-lead of the POCUS in Emergency and Acute Care Settings (PEARLS) program, in collaboration with Emergency Physician Dr. Jono Henry, which has trained over 115 clinicians in POCUS across a diverse number of low- and lower-middle-income countries.
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. McLean is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and is currently pursuing a PhD focused on the application of POCUS in low-resource settings. This research aims to enhance diagnostic capabilities and outcomes in critical care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Through his ongoing work and collaborations, Lewis remains dedicated to strengthening healthcare systems and capacity across the Indo-Pacific region.
